the marble pit of Carrara
(Carrara (MS) – Toscana)

We quote some name and the title of one of their masterpieces:

  • Michelangelo: “Moses”
  • Donatello: “David”
  • Antelami: “The meeting between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba”
  • Giambologna: “The rape of the Sabine Woman”

...and we could go on for many pages

So, if the Carrara marble had not existed maybe many of these works would not be here.
« ... lo Carrarese che di sotto alberga, ebbe tra ' bianchi marmi la spelonca per sua dimora... » [Dante Alighieri]
Then go there and visit the pits and try to imagine how this white material can be transformed from simple rock into a sublime masterpiece.

The Carrara marble, already known by Romans as “marmor lunensis” (Luni marble), is extracted from the pits of the Alpi Apuane and is worldwide famous

Two notes:

To have an overall view of the pits we suggest to go to Campo Cecina (above Carrara) or to drive along the road leading from Castelnuovo Garfagnana to the Versilia where, just after the Cipollaio tunnel, you will be merged in the marble whiteness. Just in this area there is Colonnata, which has made with this marble the case for its dainty lard.
