a glance over our rural history: the “Casoni” of the Saccisia
(Arzergrande - Piove di Sacco (PD) - Veneto)

The rural civilization of Veneto has one of its most important expressions in the “casoni” that have characterized the country for more than a thousand year.

“Casoni” not to be confused with the lagoon ones because they are homes not only fishing boxes.

Homes for poor peasants with little plots of land to whom the big landowners allowed the settlement at the borders of their estates.

Hey are ahead of their time examples of bio-building and, even better, works of art.

In the photographs the “Casone Azzurro” or “Blue Cottage” (Arzergrande) [ph 1÷15], the “Casone Rosso” or “Red Cottage” [ph 16÷21] and that of the Ramei (Piove di Sacco) [ph 22÷28].

The “Casone Azzurro” or “Blue Cottage”, maybe the only one true “casone”, inhabited for centuries till a few years ago is now completely restored and open to the public (a sincere acclaim to the Municipality of Arzergrande).

Therefore a suggestion:

If you want to deepen your knowledge of Veneto, don’t visit only the wonderful villas of the Riviera but visit also the “casoni”, easy to reach by car or by bicycle through the cycle lanes discovering suggestive glimpses of the countryside and of the channels.
