where the earth smokes 1^ part of 5: the medieval town of Castelnuovo Val di Cecina
(Castelnuovo Val di Cecina (PI) – Toscana)

In Tuscany there is a place rooted in a far off past while its branches expand in an advanced technology.
A place rich in historical heritages, medieval towns, “pievi” (rural churches), archeological thermal remains and new technologies applied to the alternative energy since this is one of the largest geothermal areas in Europe where geothermal power is exploited for energy production.

Among these green hills artificial a natural outbursts spring everywhere while shiny pipes similar to snakes channel the steam.
Placed on the borders of the provinces of Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto it is a fascinating area, still quite unknown and sparsely attended.

In this 1st part we would like to introduce to you the medieval town of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina.

A few notes:
This territory, at least the part we visited, has not a touristic vocation.
There are few hotels, restaurants or coffee bars and is difficult to find shops of local products, both souvenirs or foods.
Indeed it’s better to bring a sandwich and some drinks because you could drive for kilometers without finding a place where to refresh.
Over the years the local economy is always been based on the Enel presence: the company brought here work and wealth, but affected the tourist development.
For these reasons this part of the Tuscany is so particular, far from the tourist stream, rich in contrasts and absolutely to be known.
