a town hanging between earth and sky: Castelsardo
(Castelsardo (SS) – Sardinia)

At the center of the gulf of Asinara, on a cape hanging between the blue of the sky and the blue of the sea, on a coast rugged by high cliffs, Castelsardo enjoys a unique landscape with a view reaching the coasts of the nearby Corsica.

Among its many historical monuments we cite: the castle of the Doria (1102), the cathedral consecrated to Saint Antony the Abbot with its crypts, the walls on the sea and the sentinel path with the splendid view on the gulf. The streets of whole town deserve a walk to savor the colors, the sounds and the scents reminding the past.

To be visited also the nearby megalithic complexes, most of all the famous Roccia dell’Elefante (Elephant rock).

A short history:
The little natural landings probably favored the settlement of the ancient Nuraghic populations.
The Roman, real connoisseurs, built their palaces near the present tourist harbor.
After the fall of the Roman Empire and the takeover of the Sardinian Giudicati, a great part of the territory was donated to the Church.
In 1102 the Genoese family of the Doria built the fortress called Castelgenovese, where the people moved because of the presence of the water tanks.
Afterwards the town remained under the Aragonese dynasty until 1448, when it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
