the castle of Charles V
(Lecce (LE) - Puglia)

Close to the city center, slightly to the east, the imposing Lecce castle stands near the Roman amphitheater.

You have to walk the imposing walls (better towards evening to admire the lights of the city below) and the suggestive basement and visit the splendid papier-mâché museum, a real jewel.

A bit history:
A bit of history:
It was realized by Charles V of Habsburg in 1539 in order to defend the territory from Turkish raids.
Built on an already existing stronghold probably dating back between the 13th and 14th centuries, if not to the Norman age.
In 1870 the moat was eliminated together with the drawbridges.
From 1870 to 1979 it was used as barracks and military district; the military ownership ended in 1983 when it was donated to the municipality of Lecce.

The papier-mâché museum:
The artistic papier-mâché is a form of art that has been a salient feature of the Salento area for centuries,
Since 1700 Lecce has been one of the major centers for the processing of this material.
As proof, the ceiling of the church of Santa Chiara: at first glance it may seem a wooden coffered ceiling, but actually it is made in papier-mâché and is unique in the world.
