the Saint Efisio's procession - 2014
(Cagliari (CA) - Sardegna)

After the previous special about this feast (Saint Efisio 1977), we are proposing new images.
And why?

  • Because the images of the first special date back to 1977
  • In spite of the 36 years passed, the comparison demonstrates that Sardinia and its people preserves unchanged its tradition
  • The feast is a blaze of colors and folklore to be re-presented as a tribute to this splendid island
  • The remind it is an invitation to go there

From our friend Francesca a short note about Saint Efisio

The martyr was born in Jerusalem at half 3rd century, of a pagan mother and a Christian father.
Educated by his mother, he dislikes the pagan doctrine. Officer of the Roman army, he went to Italy to fight against the Christians. For this reason he is portrayed in military dress. During his journey to Italy, he saw a cross with thunders and lightings and the voice of Jesus told him about his future martyrdom.
Once arrived at Gaeta, he was baptized and began to fight for the Christian faith against the paganism.
He decided to help the Sardinian Christians when he knew that the tribes living in the inland mounts were still pagan.
In Sardinia he spread the gospel and was surrounded with a group of believers.
In the heat of his faith, he wrote a letter to the Emperor inviting him to conversion, but he was imprisoned and tortured.
Saint Efisio wounds were cured by the angels; this miracle event spread everywhere and caused many conversions.
When Diocletian knew about it, he ordered the execution of Efisio at Nora, so avoiding Cagliari for fear of riots in his defense.
Before his death the martyr asked God’s blessing on the Sardinian people and for this reason he is invoked in the most tragic events of the Sardinian history.
