A bit of history:
the history of the caves is lost in the mists of time:
The limestones of the Golfo di Orosei originated about 180 million years ago.
800 thousand years ago the formation of the upper rooms of the cave began.
In the Ice age (100-80 thousand years ago) the monk seals arrived here.
In 1957 the cave was explored for the first time and in 2003 it was opened to public: the route with suspended catwalks is 800 meters long while the total length explored is of about 3,2 km.
Both caves and coves hosted the monk seal but the last sightings go back to 80s.

How getting there:
Grotta del Fico: daily boat trip with departures from the ports of Santa Maria Navarrese, Arbatax or La Caletta di Siniscola.
Usual times: outward 9:00 – return journey 17:00.
The boats sail every day from June to September, weather permitting.
The hiking trails start from the upland of Golgo at Baunei and it could be a good idea to contact the Società Speleologica Baunei.contact-us
