reportage from Middle Ages
(Triora (IM) - Liguria)

We decided to headline this special “reportage from Middle Age” because visiting Triora means to lose in this era.
An incredible fascinating place, merged in the wood of the Argentina valley, with dark colors mainly due to the slate (or Lavagna stone) used for the buildings.
Entering the narrow alleys, which often become galleries, we expect to meet behind the corner one of the witches who made the town well known.

Triora has been recognized as the “” because here the bread is made by a sole bakery following the traditional way, and we hope that this tradition would remain.
As a matter of fact Triora was known as the “Republic of Genoa granary” and the only common oven was in Vicolo del Forno, where it can still be visited.

Deserving a visit also the hamlets of Realdo and Verdeggia, together with the other little villages emerging from the woods around.

The Triora witches:
between 1587 and 1589 Triora was the venue for witchcraft trials: some women were charged with causing continuous plagues, acid rains, killing cattle and even eating babies.
Of course these trials ended with an atrocious death for many women.

A short history:
Probably the town dates back to the Roman era and was founded by the Apuani.
Before long passed under the Republic of Genoa, it was contended by the Emperor Charles IV and then by the Savoy,
After the fall of the Republic of Genoa under the Napoleonic control in 1797 it entered the French department of the Maritime Alps.
In 1814, after the Congress of Vienna, it was annexed to the Reign of Italy.
Again a very sad page took place during the 2nd World War, when the Nazi fury burned entire quarters, razing them to the ground.

A suggestion:
Among the local delicacies, taste the “Bruss”, a creamy cheese spread with the delicious brown bread.
For a snack, stop to the caffè Ricicìi, in the center in the square of the parsh church, and ask for the chopping board served with cheeses, bread, various preserves and honey.

A remark:
In the parish church of Nostra Signora Assunta there is one of the most important painting of the Riviera di Ponente, a Taddeo di Bartolo’s work: unfortunately is impossible to admire this masterpiece because the church opens only for worships.
