A bit of history:
Given the Garden's notoriety let us just say, with some pride, that the Botanical Garden is the oldest in the world and has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997.
It was founded in 1545 for the cultivation of medicinal plants because the University of Padua was already famous for the study of phyto-pharmacological sciences and the application of herbal medicines.

A note:
The term kitchen garden or garden of simples (Hortus Simplicium or Hortus medicus) dates back to the early Middle Ages, as medicinal herbs were cultivated in such gardens from which the pharmacopoeia derived 'simple' preparations: crude drugs.
