in the high Parma valley among woods and green meadows
(Corniglio (PR) - Emilia Romagna)

If you like to immerse yourself in a quiet environment, in a sea of woods and green meadows and, on summer days, enjoy the fresh air go and spend a day at Corniglio.
Placed between the Bratica valley and the Parma valley, it offers extraordinary landscapes and environmental richness.
Its territory is part of the National Park of the Appennino Tosco Emiliano and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Only one flaw: a very ugly building [photo 39], visible from far away, creates a very sour note with the landscape.

A bit of history:
Of medieval origin, the first mention dates back to the first half of the 13th century.
The high valley of Parma was the setting of wars between the Byzantines and the Lombards in the area of the Cisa pass and Lagastrello and probably Corniglio was a Lombard outpost.
Afterwards Corniglio was disputed between the communes of Parma and Piacenza and finally passed under Parma in 1221.
From '300 until mid 1500 it was, with ups and downs, domain of the Counts Rossi, and then passed under the control of the Farnese, until their extinction in 1731.
It is decorated to the Military Value for the War of Liberation due to the sacrifices of the population and the partisan activities in the second world war.

A couple of notes:
Corniglio can be a great starting point to reach Apennine beautiful places: Lagdei and the Lago Santo, Lagoni and the Gemio lakes, the Cirone pass, and then down into Tuscany towards Pontremoli.
It takes about 30 minutes by car to reach all these places, starting points for pleasant excursions in the Apennines.
