lake Santo: a wonderful trip
(Corniglio (PR) - Emilia Romagna)

The person who loves nature and is passing a span of time in the area of Parma can’t help to visit the Lago Santo Parmense [*].
The lake, placed at an altitude of 4944 ft near Corniglio, is in the western side of the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano and is also part of the Parco Regionale dei Cento Laghi.
On the south it is surmounted by the Marmagna mount and by the Apennine ridge that separates the provinces of Parma and Massa Carrara.
The Parma of Lago Santo stream rises here and, after the confluence with the Parma of Badignana stream, it becomes the Parma stream proper that, after the crossing of the town of Parma, flows into the Po river.

Rich in fauna (several species of fishes, insects and crustaceans) the lake is suitable for sport activities and wonderful trips, for fishing and dive under the ice.

This lake, with its 197534 sq yd area, is the widest glacial lake of the Emilia Romagna and also the biggest natural lake of the northern Apennines.
It reaches the maximum depth of about 73.8 ft.

The lake is easily reachable from the Lagdei hut (placed at an altitude of 4101 ft, about 6.3 ml from Corniglio, with a restaurant and a large car park) with a chair lift or on foot with a 45 minutes walk through an easy path (723A).

[*] editor’s note: not to be confused with the as well beautiful Lago Santo Modenese.
