Bargone a castle in oblivion
(Salsomaggiore Terme (PR) - Emilia Romagna)

Bargone is a tiny hamlet of Salsomaggiore Terme (Parma).
It hides two peculiarities:

  • The castle completely abandoned, covered by brushwood and uncultivated bushes. The only note that brings here a bit of joy is the presence of some peacocks with beautiful colors.
  • The small church of Santa Maria Assunta, fortunately in excellent condition, that stands out among the brushwood.

A bit of history:
The castle
Probably built around the year 1000 for the bishopric of Parma.
Assigned to Count Bertoldo IV by Emperor Conrad II of Swabia in 1144.
The castle and the territory were bitterly disputed with Parma until 1191, when Henry IV ceded it to Piacenza.
It returned in possession of the commune of Parma in 1198.
After various ups and downs, the castle was dismantled and then rebuilt at the beginning of the 14th century by Gherardo de' Rangoni who later rebelled against Parma.
In 1325 Parma took back the manor imprisoning all the Rangoni family.
Until 1343 it was owned by the Bertoldingi family.
In 1360 Charles IV assigned it to the Pallavicino family.
There were many other vicissitudes of the fortress, and then in 1587 the castle was conquered by the Farnese, who in 1650 sold it to the Marquis Felice Mari of Genoa.
The castle, by now become an elegant noble residence, was bought by Carlo Farioli, passing then to his heirs.
With the death of Silvio Farioli in 2017 the castle and its park fell into complete ruin.
The church
Built in medieval times near the ravelin of the castle.
In 1759 it was completely rebuilt in baroque style.
