This time our friend Stefania brings us to visit the basilica of San Salvatore dei Fieschi, one of the most renowned Gothic-Romanesque buildings in Liguria.

Placed in the Fontanabuona valley at Cogorno, it was an important religious center since it represented a stop for the pilgrims going to Rome along the Via Francigena.

A short history:
Its foundation was ordered by pope Innocent IV (born Sinibaldo Fieschi and from there the name of the church) in 1245 while he was travelling towards Lyon for the Council.
During this Council the emperor Frederick II sacked all the country, damaging also the basilica and the village.
The restoration works began in 1252, with the rebuilding of the village and of the new Fieschi palace.
The basilica was consecrated again in 1276 by Pope Adrian V, born Ottobono Fieschi, nephew of Innocent IV.

The basilica was restored in 19th century and at the end of 20th century.
