Calasetta 'the White'
(Calasetta (CI) – Sardegna)

Thanks to the images of our friend Angela we can demonstrate that is no point in looking for limpid seas and white beaches in faraway exotic countries: on our doorstep we can enjoy comparable if not better places.
We are talking about Calasetta in the island of Sant’Antioco, on the south-west of the Sardinia.
Calasetta is called “the White” because of the typical whitewash of its houses, which makes a perfect counterpoint with the deep blue of the sky and of the sea and with the green of the Mediterranean scrubland.
So let’s go to visit Calasetta and stay there for a long holiday: the first impact will be amazing and arriving to the island you will admire flocks of pink flamingos.

Some notes:
Calasetta can boast not only sea and beaches: here you could visit several nuraghe and the contemporary art museum “Ermanno Leinardi”, with a rich collection.
And you will taste the local specialties, the fresh tuna dishes, the chickpea flat bread and the fish soups, served with excellent wine.

A short history:
at about half 1500 some Ligurian settled on the little Tunisian island of Tabarka to practice the commerce and the coral fishing.
In 1700, due to the poor return of the fishing and to the difficult relationship with the Tunisians, they moved to Carloforte and then to Calasetta.
In 1758 the king of Sardinia gave to the religious order of the Saints Maurice and Lazarus the government of Calasetta, formally constituted in 1770.
Due to its origin, the population names itself “tabarchina” as well as the spoken language (a variant of the Ligurian dialect).
