Roccabianca castle
(Roccabianca (PR) - Emilia Romagna)

Among the countless castles of the Parma province, is certainly notable also that of Roccabianca, even if some parts have been altered by inadequate restorations.

The towering austere donjon stands out even if the castle is partially hidden by the surrounding buildings.
The recent renovation highlighted valuable frescoes recalling those of the Rossi castle at San Secondo Parmense, built by Pier Maria Rossi ruler of both the castles (Rossi's castle).

Don’t forget to go up on the top of the donjon to admire the landscape of the Po Valley and of the town.

A short history with a touch of gossip:
Built in the first half of 1400 by Pier Maria Rossi, the castle is typically medieval and so indefensible against the coming fire arms. In fact the castle had not military purposes and was built as a residence for Bianca Pellegrini, the lover of Pier Maria who was already married with Antonia Torelli.
Bianca had a lot of influence on the village too, that changed its name from Arzenoldo (or Arsinoldo or Rezinoldo) to Roccabianca i.e. the Bianca’s castle.

A suggestion:
In the castle there is an interesting shop, where is possible taste and buy delicious local liqueurs, as the “bargnolino” (an Italian variation of sloe gin, made by soaking sloe berries from the blackthorn plant), the “sburlon” (made with quinces) and the unfailing “nocino” (with walnuts).

A remark:
It is a pity that Minozzi square, in front of the castle, is in decay.
The restoration of these buildings could transform this square in the parlour of the town, perfect to enter the castle.
Update 2021: the square has been somewhat rearranged.
