a town surrounded by the mountains: Clusone
(Clusone (BG) – Lombardia)

If you mention Clusone, immediately your interlocutor will think to “... the town with the astronomical clock” or “the Triumph of Death at the Oratory of Disciplini”.
But it is reductionist image of this town.

Clusone is not only the clock or the frescoes: it is a splendid town which deserves a close visit to discover its beautiful glimpses.

And you have to visit the other monuments as for example the Basilica di S. Maria Assunta, the aforesaid Oratory, the Fogaccia Palace, the Carrara Spinelli Maffei Palace and the MAT (Art and Time Museum) at the Marinoni Barca Palace that offers a fascinating journey from 1400 to nowadays.

A short history:
Its origin goes back to 1300 BC.
Roman settlement, at the fall of the Empire it was dominated by the Lombards and then by the Franks.
The first written document mentioning Clusone dates back to 774 AD.
Under the Republic of Venice the town enjoyed the period of maximum development artistic, cultural and commercial.
The town followed the fate of the Serenissima until the treaty of Campoformio when it joined the Repubblica Cisalpina. The territory was then allocated to the Austrians and Clusone entered the Regno Lombardo Veneto until the Italian unification.

Two words about the Fanzago’s Planetary Clock:
It’s an extraordinary work created by Pietro Fanzago in 1583 and still used today.
The clock reports the movements of the sun and of the moon, the hours of the day and the duration of the night, the equinoxes and the solstices, the zodiac constellations, the lunation, the months, the hours and the minutes.
Every day it is manually winded up.
