the castellana chess
(Conegliano (TV) – Veneto)

Every year in June the streets and the squares in Conegliano, as if by magic, go back to the Renaissance age.
Since a few years in June recurs the game of checkers with renaissance costumes called the Dama Castellana.
Even if this is not a centuries-old tradition it however became a must.

And we have not to forget to visit this splendid town, rich in historical buildings, and all the surroundings, with the magnificent Venetian villas.
Last but not least the good wines of its hills.

A short history:
In 1231 the inhabitants of Conegliano succeeded in defeating the “invincible” Treviso during the dark age of the bloody wars among feudatories.
It is said that the winners were carried by the Treviso soldiers on their back up to the castle.
After many centuries this episode inspired the Dama Castellana: the winners gain the keys to the city while the losers have to push a cart with the rival lady up to the castle through a steep slope.
