Gairo Vecchio: the ghost village
(Gairo (NU) – Sardegna)

This time our friend Francesca shows us a fascinating, but sad, side of her island.

Unfortunately there are many ghost villages mostly in the Apennines area that we present you in 4 photos by way of example.

They are settled in wild places, far from the transit routes so it is understandable that many villages were abandoned because of the gradual migration to the towns of job seekers and because of the adverse hydrogeological conditions.
This depopulation causes a progressive degradation of the country and a constant worsening of the hydrogeological conditions.
Certainly it is difficult to come up with a solution for these numerous situations; sometimes the renovations returned us real jewels which attract a niche market of tourists fond of nature and quietness.
In recent days Dacia Maraini, talking about the problem of migrants, proposed the ghost villages were leaved in migrants care, who, after the renovations and subject to the due controls, could bring the villages to a new life.
In our opinion this idea deserves a close examination and a feasibility study.
Considering that these villages are often settled in beautiful places they could become, as already mentioned, alternative tourist destinations.

A few notes about Gairo Vecchio:
Well-known Sardinian ghost village, placed in one of the most beautiful areas of the Ogliastra, it is an important archaeological example of settlement of the eastern central Sardinia.
Due to violent storms and consequent landslides and after the terrible flood of 1951, the village was abandoned and was rebuilt uphill.
