Iggio a small village in the upper Stirone valley
(Iggio (PR) - Emilia Romagna)

Hidden amidst the undulations of the Apennines, lies a tiny and fascinating village, a hamlet of Pellegrino Parmense, small but steeped in millennial history.

After the junction with SP 109, it is nice to walk along the road, slowly, admiring the landscape and the rich flora, and then stop in silence to admire the stone houses and the imposing church.

A bit of history:
A bit of history:
Very little information is found concerning the village.
Almost all mentions concern the parish church of San Martino, documented since 1040.
Opposite the church is

  • a beautiful building dating back to the end of the 15th century.
  • an imposing building probably dating back to the 17th century
  • Also in front of the church is an important building, probably from the 14th century, characterized by a large entrance portal.

It appears that the church was completely rebuilt in the 15th century.
In the second half of the 18th century, renovation works were started, of which there is no record of when they were completed.
It was restored again in 1924 and the Romanesque portal was brought to light.

A curiosity:
Around the mid-1800s, the village hosted the ‘esposti’[a] generally from Parma.
At the time apparently almost every family in the village hosted an "esposto"[a]  and there were numerous marriages between them and the local population.

[a] abandoned children, illegitimate children, children of unknown persons, children for whom public assistance is required.
