the infiorate in the Parma bassa
(Polesine Zibello (PR) - Emilia Romagna)

During the month of June, many churches in the Parma region are adorned with beautiful and colourful flower carpets.
Carpets that recall the more famous one in Chiaravalle della Colomba (see), but are no less beautiful or evocative.
We publish photos of three infiorate:

  • collegiate church of San Giovanni in Pieveottoville [photos 1÷14]
  • oratory of Santa Franca Visalta in Santa Franca [photos 15÷22]
  • archpriest's church of San Cristoforo in Vidalenzo [photo 23÷31]
Take note of these locations, all in the municipality of Polesine-Zibello, and in June, during the period of the infiorate , be sure to visit them

A bit of history:

collegiate church of San Giovanni

the ancient church stands on the banks of the river Po apparently from the 9th century.
Around the middle of the 12th century, as the village moved further south, a new church was built and the old one disappeared.
In 1867, it was elevated to a collegiate church as it could boast a large number of ecclesiastical benefices.

oratory of Santa Franca Visalta

little is known about this charming little church that stands close to the main bank of the Po.
It was built in the 14th century by the Cistercian monks of Chiaravalle della Colomba.
Apparently it was the seat of the Cistercian nuns also known as Bernardine nuns.

archpriest's church of San Cristoforo

the first news of its existence is documented in 1180 due to a border dispute between the bishops of Cremona and Piacenza.
In 1436 it was subject to the parish of Busseto.
It was only in 1934 that the complete autonomy of the parish was recognised, declaring it totally and perpetually detached from the church of S. Bartolomeo, and the parish priest of Vidalenzo was declared immovable and with the title of archpriest.
