his is the last part of our specials “Where the earth smokes” with some images dedicated to the Biancane natural park.
Placed near Monterotondo Marittimo, the park clearly shows how the geothermal power modifies the landscape.

In the park there are many geothermal phenomena as various kinds of fumaroles.

In the lower part of the park there is the Lagone, where the water can reach 302° F and sometimes can be raised up to over one meter high (3 foot).

A botanical feature: in this park, due to the ground temperature, you can find the cork oak (Quercus suber), which doesn’t stand temperatures lower than 23 ° F.

Unfortunately the images fail to catch the splendor of the landscape, much less the sulfurous smell of devilish underworld.

The park is under the jurisdiction of the “Parco Tecnologico Archeologico delle Colline Metallifere Grossetane”.

We recommend a visit and, for the hikers, a walk along the path leading to Sasso Pisano which offers the best views.
