After our walk through the village we visit the sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. We also highlight the great interest of the entire Gargano area: villages, forest and sea. |

A bit of history: Although the area appears to have been inhabited since 5th century A.D., the village dates back to around 1000 AD. Following several apparitions of the archangel Michael in the 7th century, the cave of his apparition became a national shrine. Due to the considerable inflow of pilgrims to the cavern, the urban centre evolved and between the late 11th and early 12th century it became the capital of a vast Norman territory. In the early 15th century, it obtained the title of City from Pope Boniface IX. It suffered a disastrous earthquake in 1646 that caused several buildings to collapse and several people to die. In the 19th century it became part of the Kingdom of Italy, together with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
