Rochemolles village |

About 4,3 ml away from Bardonecchia, along the road starting next to that of the Frejus tunnel, you find the village of Rochemolles. The narrow but tarred road wedges in the deep of the homonymous valley. At Rochemolles the tar road ends and so a stop is required to admire the nice hamlet (5310 ft), the old mill, the church of Saint Peter Apostle (dating back to 1200), the main street with its houses in local stone and flowering balconies. |

Driving on (on dirt but practicable track) you could reach an artificial lake dominated by the rocky Pierre Menue (11496 ft), the highest peak of the Cottian Alps, and 5.9 ml ahead the Scarfiotti Refuge (7003 ft). With an off-road vehicle you could drive further on and reach the Piano dei Morti (7874 ft) and then drive up to the Colle del Sommeiller at 9482 ft [*]. Rochemolles is also notorious for the several avalanches that hit the village during the centuries. In 1931 a devastating avalanche brought death and ruin in the village. [*] the road is open only during the months of July and August For more info: |
