archaeological Sardinia 2
(Goni, Serri, Quartucciu (CA) – Sardegna)

Our friend Francesca continues to amaze us with her images of the maybe less known Sardinia.
This time she shows us:

  • the archaeological complex at Pranu Mutteddu
  • the Nuraghic sanctuary of Santa Vittoria
  • the Tomb of Giants at Is Concias

As already recommended for a while leave the clear waters and the splendid coves and give you time to visit these sites.
It would certainly be an unforgettable experience.

Some notes:

Necropolis at Pranu Mutteddu [photo 1÷13]:
The necropolis, also called the “Italian Stonehenge”, much older than the English one, is the most important pre-Nuraghic necropolis in Sardinia.
The site boasts the highest concentration of menhirs and megaliths in Sardinia, about sixty distributed across the area.
There is also a structure of pre-Nuraghic tombs dug into the rock (domus de janas).

Nuraghic sanctuary of Santa Vittoria [photo 14÷23]
Placed at 670 meters above sea level, it has been attended since 1500 BC at the beginning of the Nuraghic civilization.
It was transformed between 1100 BC and 900/800 BC in one of the most interesting expression of the Nuraghic religiousness.
This expression continues in the Christian age with the building of a little church, probably of Byzantine structure, dedicated to Santa Maria della Vittoria

Tomb of the Giants [photo 24 ÷27]:
Ascribable to the Intermediate-Late Bronze Age, it is placed on the western side of the Sette Fratelli massif.
As other tombs of the giants it presents the so called “layered façade” and at the middle of the exedra there is the entrance to the burial chamber.
Outside there is the “bethel”, a stone with a sacred function because it is the dwelling place of a divinity or because it is identified with the divinity itself.
