the necropolis of Montessu
(Villaperuccio (CI) - Sardegna)

Once again Francesca leads us in the mists of time visiting one of the most important pre-Nuraghic monuments placed in a natural trachyte amphitheater in the heart of the Sulcis.

Who knows only the Sardinia of the summertime could be surprised by the dazzling greenery of the plain and of the hills.

A bit of history:
It is the most important and extended necropolis of “domus de janas” on the southern Sardinia.
Dating back to the third millennium BC (late Neolithic) it was frequented for about a 1000 years and then constantly haunted by several pre-Nuraghic populations nearly until the Nuraghic age.
Some "domus de janas" are characterized by patterns engraved in relief: spirals, concentric symbols, horns, false doors to the afterlife, remains of bars painted with red and yellow ochre and silhouettes of the Mother Goddess.
The first archaeological excavations began in 1972 and are still going on.
