archaeological Sardinia
(Sorradile, Fordongianus, Ulà Tirso (OR) - Sardegna)

And now our friend Francesca brings us to the dawn of time: from the beginning (Neolithic and Chalcolithic) to the Roman age and finally to the present day with an industrial archaeological site.

Quite driving a time machine Francesca continues to surprise us with the wonders of her island.

Necropolis of Prunittu [photo 1÷11]
Placed at a few kilometers from Sorradile, chronologically it lies within the culture of Ozieri (3500-2900 B.C.).
It is composed by 27 domus de janas (prehistoric tombs dug into the rock).
Some of them are easily accessible; others dug in the rock face are reachable only from the top down.
Probably the tombs were reused in the Byzantine age.

Roman thermae of Fordongianus [photo 12÷18]
Placed close to Fordogianus (mentioned in 170 B.C. under the name of Aquae Ypsitanae) the thermae comprise two establishments, one fed by a source of hot water and the other artificially heated.
The thermae have been dated as follows: the first one at 1st century A.D. and the second one at 3rd century A.D.

Dam of Santa Chiara [photo 19÷24]
Began in 1917, its building ended in 1924.
Planned by the engineer Angelo Omodeo (who gives the name to the lake), it was built by the engineer Giulio Dolcetta. The works constrain to demolish the village of Zuri.
The lake Omodeo hides several treasures: tombs of giants, domus de janas, a pre-Nuraghic settlement, a tropical petrified wood with trees 20 million years old, bones of extinct animals, the remains of the village and a house which appears or disappears depending on the level of the water called the “house of the chief of the power station” or the “keeper house”.
The dam was used until 1997, when a larger dam was built.
