Vipiteno: the home of yogurt – part 1 of 2
(Vipiteno / Sterzing (BZ)-Trentino Alto Adige)

Splendid town placed in a flat and green valley of the High Isarco Valley.
It is famous for its dairy products, especially butter and yogurt.
It is rich in traditions and buildings that recall, as in all of South Tyrol, neighboring Austria.
It is certainly worthy of a quick stay, or even better of a longer stay to admire the town and to visit its surroundings.

A bit of history:
The Sterzing area was already inhabited in pre-Roman times by the Breuni people.
The few traces remaining of the first Roman settlement date back to 14 B.C.
Towards the end of the 13th century, Duke Meinhard of Carinthia elevated the town to the rank of city that reached its maximum splendor between the 15th and 16th centuries.
In 1443 a fire destroyed a large part of the town, so new buildings were constructed, both crenellated and in Gothic style, which still adorn the main street.
