the walled town of Pizzighettone - 2

After about a year our collaborator Erika went back to Pizzighettone, the town over the bank of the river Adda, which certainly deserves a new visit.

We present some views of the town and of the old church of San Bassiano together with some photo of the gloomy but suggestive jail

A few notes about the church and the jail:

The church of San Bassiano:
Founded in 1158 in First Romanesque style by the Lodi refugees fled form their town destroyed by Milan.
The church was many times reshaped: the built of the façade and of the two side chapels in 1460 and of the bell tower in 1533.
The frescoes date back to 1540-1543.
Between 1741 and 1835 the church was completely reshaped assuming the present feature.

The jail:
Considered at the time one of the most rigorous and used from 1785 as an Austrian military prison, it was later used by the Italian Kingdom and then by the Republic.
It was permanently closed in 1954.
There are still visible the dormitories (made in the old casemate of the fortress), the wall-walk of the warders and the punishment cells.
Even if very stark, it is an impressive historical evidence.
