we drive along the Stuzzano road
(Stuzzano, Rigollo (PR) - Emilia Romagna)

After discovering the village of Iggio (see), we returned to this area to take the Stuzzano road.
Starting from the junction with the SP109, after a short stretch, we leave the SP76, which leads to Iggio, and turn right.
This is a beautiful uncontaminated natural area.
We mention only two points along the road

  • At Stuzzano, a small Majesty with the image of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus in her arms. The Majesty is surrounded by cherry trees that, when we passed by, were laden with red cherries
  • The Church of San Pietro Apostolo in Rigollo, apparently built in the 17th century on the remains of an older church. The only observation is that it seems to be in a state of decay.

Along the way, a number of farmhouses are encountered, many of them abandoned.
The panoramic views of the villages on the opposite side are spectacular.
At Rigollo we met a very kind person who told us that there are only three inhabitants in the hamlet, he, his wife and a person over eighty years old.
Beware, after Rigollo the road becomes a bit rutted although it is still passable.
We recommend the route to people who love nature, silence and places outside mass tourism.

A bit of history:
The first records of Rigollo's existence date back to 1579.
In 1599, the archpriest Giovanni Battista Labellus was sent to the village and reported that there were 16 inhabitants.

A little mystery:
It seems that there is gold ore in the small Stirone Rivarolo stream, which passes near the village, and the village parish priest obtained a mining license in the early 1900s.
It seems that even the Romans knew about it, in fact the name of the village is said to derive from the Latin name Aurigullum.
